Mildred Sluka's Obituary
MILDRED ESTHER SLUKA, AGE 94, PASSED AWAY ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2024. Mildred was the daughter of Frank and Esther Hovorka and was born on February 7, 1930 in Cleveland, Ohio. She was baptized into Christ on April 20, 1930 by Pastor W. H. Storm at Concordia Lutheran Church, Cleveland, OH and confirmed April 18, 1943 at Concordia Lutheran Church by Pastor Storm. Her confirmation verse was "For whosoever is born of God overcometh the world; and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith" (I John 5:4).
Mildred married Charles H. Sluka on May 14, 1949 at Concordia Lutheran Church, Cleveland and together they had 52 years of marriage. She was the loving mother of Laura Perchan (Steve), William Sluka (Dianne), and Garry Sluka (Renae); grandmother of Sara Perchan, Bethany Cordill (Doug), Melissa Aufdenkampe (Adam), Toni Sluka, Tracy Sluka, and Andrew Kabelen; great grandmother of five.
Mildred worked for the Cleveland and Cuyahoga County Libraries. She also worked at Concordia Lutheran Church, Emerald Health, and Barth Industries in the personnel department.
Her favorite Bible passages were Isaiah 43:1-3, Psalm 23, Matt. 28:20, John 14:18, and so many more. She was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church Cleveland and also St. John's in Garfield Heights. In 1980, she went to Concordia Independence (where she worked in the office, served on the Altar Guide, Vacation Bible Class, Bible classes, Women's Missionary League, etc.
At Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Mildred served as a Stephen Minister, worked on the Care Ministry Team, Bible Class, and instituted a Christian group for widows.
In her senior years she belonged to the Broadview Heights Senior Center where she enjoyed the company of other people and playing cards. Mildred was phenomenal at needlepoint and knitting. She made afghan blankets for many family members and friends as well as baby blankets.
FRIENDS MAY CALL AT CONCORDIA LUTHERAN CHURCH 6705 BRECKSVILLE RD., INDEPENDENCE ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16, FROM 9:30-11:00 AM. Funeral service will be held at 11 AM at the church.
