Irene J. Benedict's Obituary
Irene J. Benedict passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family, after a long journey with illness. She lived a life marked by compassion, service, faith, creativity, and unwavering dedication to others. Born September 29, 1951 in Munich, Germany, she was the cherished daughter of the late Henryk and Anna (nee Kuchar) Korepta.
A proud graduate of St. Vincent Charity School of Nursing, Irene devoted 30 years to caring for patients as a psychiatric nurse at St. Vincent Charity Hospital. She was known not only for her professional skill, but for her kindness and belief in treating every person with dignity and respect.
Her caring nature extended beyond her career. She generously supported her siblings, John Korepta, Christine Korepta (deceased) and Richard Korepta through difficult circumstances and remained steadfast in her belief in compassion, accountability, and redemption.
Irene was intelligent, creative, and deeply curious. She possessed a sharp wit and a delightfully wicked sense of humor. She found great joy in learning and being creative. A lifelong student, she loved books and was always eager to explore new ideas and interests. She expressed her creativity through ceramics, painting, sewing, needle arts, and many other creative pursuits. She also enjoyed visiting art museums, exploring new places, and appreciating the simple pleasures of life. Her Christian faith was an important source of strength throughout her life. She found comfort in attending church, listening to Christian radio, and reading the Bible, practices that grounded her through both times of joy and seasons of hardship.
In her later years, she faced profound health challenges, including vascular dementia, open-heart surgery, myasthenia gravis, and diabetes. These illnesses gradually took away her independence and many aspects of the life she once knew, but they never erased the impact she had on others or the love she so freely gave. Dementia diminished much, but it could not diminish the legacy she leaves behind.
She is survived by her devoted husband, David, her partner in marriage since 1976. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 10, shortly before her passing. Throughout her years of illness, he cared for her with unwavering devotion. She is also survived by her daughter, Sarah (Tim Howlett) and son, Matthew, who stood beside their father in providing loving care, support, and companionship during their mother's most difficult years. Her two grandchildren, Elias and Julianna, held a very special place in her heart, and she cherished every moment she spent with them. Family meant everything to her, and she found comfort, strength, and joy in their presence throughout her life.
Irene will be remembered for her kindness, resilience, faith, creativity, and dedication to caring for others. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched through both her profession and her everyday acts of compassion.
Family will receive friends at Vodrazka Golubski Deliberato Funeral Care, 6505 Brecksville Rd., Independence, on Sunday, August 2, 2026 from 12 pm - 4 pm. Funeral service Monday, August 3, 2026 at 10 am at Community of Hope Church, 1435 W. Royalton Rd., Broadview Heights, Ohio 44147 (PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH).
Interment will follow at Hope Memorial Cemetery, Hinckley, Ohio.
