Eugene R. Chodzin's Obituary
Eugene R. Chodzin, age 96 of Independence, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 2, 2026. Born April 13, 1930 in Cleveland, Ohio, Gene was the son of the late Eugene and Bernice (nee Archacki) Chodzin. Beloved husband of the late June (nee Blackburn) Chodzin. Loving father of Nancy Berzinskas (Dan), Jane (Julie Powell), Tom (Becky), Ken (Amy) and Donna Belitz (Jack). Cherished grandfather of Danny Berzinskas (Stephanie), Andy Berzinskas (Shawney), Timothy Chodzin (Courtney), Carrie Chodzin, Devon Chodzin (Eric Bennett), Hanna Waters (Tommy), John Belitz (Caroline), Jesse Belitz (Elizabeth), Sam Belitz (Victoria), Joshua Belitz (Abigail) and Rachel Belitz (fiance Isaac List). Dear great grandfather of 5. Brother of the late Mary Ann Krulich.
Gene was a proud 1952 graduate of Kent State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree and laid the foundation for a long and dedicated professional career. He went on to serve as an accountant with Shell Oil Company, where he worked faithfully for 35 years before retiring.
Gene was deeply rooted in the community he called home, and he was a member of the Independence Kiwanis for many years. He loved living in Independence and made his home there for 61 years. During that time, he became a familiar and respected presence to those who knew him. He valued the comfort of home, the strength of community, and the simple blessings of everyday life.
Faith was central to Gene's life. He was a longtime member of St. Michael Church, where he also served as an usher and a member of the Holy Name Society. His devotion to his church and his faith was evident in the way he lived, the way he treated others, and the example he set for those around him.
Gene was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army. He also enjoyed many pastimes that brought him joy and companionship. He was an avid sports fan, with a special love for the Cleveland Browns and Guardians. He followed them with enthusiasm and loyalty, sharing in the excitement and challenges that came with being a devoted fan. He was also a six-time Bocci League Champion. In addition, he played Pinochle twice a week, enjoying the fellowship and friendly competition that came with the game.
Above all else, Gene treasured time spent with his family. His family was a source of pride and joy throughout his life, and he cherished the moments they shared together.
Gene will be remembered as a man of faith, dedication, and warmth. He lived with quiet strength and a generous heart, and he left behind a legacy of love, loyalty, and steadfast devotion.
Gene's family would like to thank the caring staff at Vista Springs and Miracle City Hospice for their compassionate care that they provided.
Family and friends may gather for visitation on Friday, August 7, 2026 at Vodrazka Golubski Deliberato Funeral Care, 6505 Brecksville Rd., Independence from 3-7 pm. Mass of Christian burial Saturday, August 8, 2026 at St. Michael Catholic Church, 6912 Chestnut Rd., Independence at 10 a.m. (PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH). Gene will be laid to rest at Mapleshade Cemetery with Military Honors presented by the U.S. Army.
